Maciej Figas
He graduated from the Faculty of Music Education and Rhythmics at the Academy of Music in Gdańsk and the Faculty of Composition, Conducting and Music Theory at the Academy of Music in Poznań, where he specialized in conducting, in Prof. Witold Krzemieński’s class.
He also studied at the Faculty of Vocal Music and Drama at the Gdańsk Academy for two years.
In January 1988 he began his professional career at Opera Nova in Bydgoszcz, first as assistant conductor, then as conductor, and in April 1991 he worked as the Opera’s Director for Artistic Matters.
In November 1992 he was appointed Director of Opera Nova and he has been holding the position until now.
In his repertoire he has a number of opera, operetta performances and musicals works. He has been the principal conductor of, for example, Carmen by Bizet, Nabucco , La Traviata , Rigoletto by Verdi, Turandot ,Tosca , Madama Butterfly by Puccini, Mefistofele by Boito, Manru by Paderewski and Die lustige Witwe , Das Land des Lächelns by Lehár, Die Fledermaus and Der Zigeunerbaron by Strauss, Grafin Mariza by Kálmán, My Fair Lady by Loewe-Lerner, Rusalka by Dvorak,Romeo and Juliette by Prokofiev, Stabat Mater.Harnasie by Szymanowski, Coppelia by Delibes.
He is regularly invited to Germany, Holland and Luxembourg, where he conducts performances and concerts. He is also a frequent participant of the Summer Opera Festival in Xanten, where he once conducted the Gala Concert, which featured the renowned Wagnerian tenor, René Kollo.
Among his recorded works, one finds Stanisław Moniuszko’s Straszny Dwór (The Haunted Manor), which was performed under his directorship in 1994 and Paderewski’s Manru on DVD in 2012.
He was the originator of the annual Bydgoszcz Opera Festival (since 1994).
